Ride The Vibe Podcast 3.20.24
Michael Litten - aka “The Last DJ”- hosts the excellent podcast, Ride The Vibe, where he interviews his favorite upcoming original music artists. Litten reached out to Squawk after seeing them live and invited them to join him in the studio for this episode of Ride The Vibe. Litten interviews the band to discuss their latest releases, tastes in music (and vodka), and the band’s creative origins. A good time was had by all in this fun and quirky conversation.
Some Talk about Squawk
“I was enjoying the funky groove of the Chook intro but, still sat thinking…. Hmm, I’m not sure if it’s for me… THEN.. a voice appears and it just sent the hairs on the back of my neck on end and, as the song goes.. You got me on the hook! I was sold! If it hadn’t been already, the killer bass solo that was to follow after the two and a half minute mark would have swung it for sure. Not enough bass solos in tracks for my liking – Loads of bands do it live but not on a recording for some reason? The way it then launches into the guitar solo was like someone adding Belgian chocolate sauce to my ice-cream – Perfection! Stunning song with such a smooth, dirty yet sexy vibe.”
“I loved the melody in the Flare Bear intro and how the music changed up when it became time for the vocal to make it’s entrance – which, incidentally, is still like silk! (remember their previous track, Chook?) There was a nice and effective blend of styles here, with some nice progressive elements combined with a classic, almost soft, pop rock vibe. Around 2:50 we are treated to a really funky bit of tasteful bass that leads us into the guitar solo and I thought the way it led us back into the vocals was pretty seamless. Low and behold though, a short time later, we have more slick guitar solo work which plays out for the remainder of the song bringing us to a relaxed, fade out finish. Well written and performed with stunning production.”

“Along with Apple Music’s new music suggestions, I decided to dive into some of my friends’ music or music that has a lot of hype that I just haven’t given the time of day. I am speechless with the EP that Squawk released in 2021. My original plan with this idea was to listen and find one song I like the most as I go on these adventures. This whole EP is amazing. As someone who has melodies or other pieces of music come into my head and a desire to turn them into a full blown song, I am astonished. It’s a masterpiece. I mean, I’m astonished at what they have done here. The bands that came to my mind while I was listening were Papadosio, Incubus, and Steely Dan.”
